The Annie & Irma's Soulfood Cafe' project was a passion project. I came up with the name Annie & Irma’s Soul Food Kitchen after my two grandmothers, who both specialized in cooking soul food.
We grew up in eating Soul Food on Sundays, holidays, and special occasions. In the early years we spent holidays at my maternal grandmother’s (Irma) house and after she passed, I started spending more time with my paternal grandmother (Annie).

The one thing both of these women had in common was they could cook a mean southern soul food meal. Irma’s signature meals was Christmas Gumbo, Chili Stacks & Macaroni and Cheese. Annie specialized in Collard Greens, Bread Pudding & Banana Pudding.

Together both women inspired me to want to open a restaurant to honor their legacy.

I can't really speak to this year in terms of my standout memory, because I took a break to be a mom and really focus on my children. In 2020, in the midst of the pandemic and racial injustice I felt like I got a giant hug from the design community. My AIGA family rallied around me, they sent kind messages, checked up on me and really made me feel like they cared. Their ability to look past color, and show genuine concern really pushed me to get out of my creative rut and start designing again.
