This step-and-repeat banner was designed by Jessica Gerlach for the School of Natural Resources & the Environment (SNRE) at the University of Arizona, intended for use during special events such as homecoming and graduation. The primary purpose of this design was to visually represent the institution’s dedication to the study and protection of natural resources and the environment. By incorporating various elements like native wildlife, plants, and environmental motifs, the banner reflects the school’s mission and the ecological diversity of the region it serves.

The design solution features a vibrant illustration style, with native species and natural elements specific to the southwestern U.S. prominently displayed. It includes animals like the roadrunner, a bobcat, and pronghorn antelope, as well as plants like cacti and flowers, highlighting the importance of conservation and the unique biodiversity of the region. The colors used throughout the banner, including deep blues, reds, and greens, are tied to the University of Arizona’s brand identity, seamlessly blending school pride with the natural theme. The inclusion of the university’s logo further reinforces its branding while maintaining the environmental focus.

The banner’s significance lies in its ability to visually communicate the school’s values and areas of focus while serving as a backdrop for photo opportunities and other celebratory moments. Its lively design fosters school pride and enhances the overall experience at key events. For Jessica, the project represents a meaningful opportunity to contribute to a prestigious academic institution while utilizing her creative skills to produce an engaging and memorable piece of visual communication.

This past year has been a truly special journey for me, thanks to an incredible project that allowed me to dive into the heart of Arizona’s natural beauty. I had the chance to design collateral for the 50th Anniversary of the School of Natural Resources and the Environment (SNRE) at the University of Arizona. It was more than just a design gig; it felt like I was weaving together the school’s dedication to conservation, environmental science, and the stunning landscapes of our region. Working on this milestone celebration gave me a deeper appreciation for SNRE’s mission and for what makes Arizona such a unique place. One of the most rewarding moments was seeing my designs come to life at the anniversary events. The feedback from colleagues and attendees was overwhelmingly positive, and it was amazing to see how thoughtful design can truly make a difference. Our creative team at ALVSCE has been blending tradition with innovation, and I hope my work captures that spirit—honoring Arizona’s rich biodiversity while also looking towards the future. I’m excited about what’s next for Arizona’s design community and eager to see how we continue to celebrate and shape our state’s identity in harmony with its natural and cultural wonders.
