Each semester, student copywriters and graphic designers from Grand Canyon University (GCU) join to work on a passion project that allows them to improve collaboration skills, embrace their creativity and have fun. During the Spring 2023 semester, students set out to design original fonts that helped fulfill unique design challenges.

Student designer Leila Brock and student copywriter Sarah Lewis saw a gap in font availability for an easy-to-read display typeface that still incorporates floral visuals. The two students worked to create a concept and develop a landing page and poster to advertise this new original font.

Deliverables created include:
• Project concepting
• Typeface design
• Posters
• Presentation
• Landing page

Their work resulted in Evergreen, a typeface targeting florists, small flower shops and flower recipients. For this audience, flowers are more than a simple gift: they are a business and an expression of love. Design choices were made to inspire thoughts of the crisp air, birds chirping and a sense of peace and joy. Each letter was hand-illustrated with care.

The soft petals of a rose on the letter G show boundless love and adoration. The dainty, white daisy petals on the letter B signify purity and new beginnings. A tulips’ bold, rounded petals on the T letter represent life-giving relationships and pure happiness. This font, Evergreen, gives designers a way for copy to come to life!
